The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq has assured that older persons in the country will be given care and continued support.
Sadiya Farouq gave this assurance while receiving Claudia Mahler, the UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights of older persons in Abuja.
Nigeria currently has a population of over 200 million people, with the majority of its citizens being youths.
People aged 65 and above account for approximately 3.1 percent of the population in the country, but population projections indicate that with improved healthcare, older people will become a significant portion of society by 2050.

Claudia Mahler, the United Nations Independent Expert on the enjoyment of Human Rights by older persons, is in Nigeria to learn about Nigeria’s legal framework, policies and strategies on older persons and how Nigeria addresses concerns of human rights abuse in ageing Population.
The Minister explained that the Federal Government has already established a number of policies to reduce discrimination against them and encourage inclusion.
While in Nigeria, Mahler will meet with top government officials to discuss Nigeria’s efforts to address the rights of the elderly, those in detention, and other vulnerable groups.
The UN visitor will share preliminary observations on this mission and recommendations on what Nigeria may need to improve at the end of her one-week visit.
