Former vice president and presidential flag bearer of the People’s Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar have donated the sum of 50 million Naira as an Independent flood disaster relief fund for persons displaced by the flooding in Bayelsa State.
The Adamawa-born politician made the declaration as he visited an IDP camp in the state.

Arriving with an entourage, the former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was led through the crowd by the Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, into the Oxbow-bow lake pavilion in Yenagoa to meet with the displaced persons taking refuge in the camp.
With an initial donation of 50 million naira flood disaster relief fund, the PDP presidential flag bearer, assured the IDPs of his support in this most challenging period in the state.
With loads of relief materials from the state and other nongovernmental organisations arriving at the various IDP camps in Bayelsa, it is believed the people will be well taken care of from the donations.
But as the flood waters still show minimal signs of rescinding, the damage to lives and properties in the state is yet beyond comprehension.
Reports by the ministry of humanitarian affairs, and disaster management says the floods have affected 3,219,780 persons, with no fewer than 612 killed.
It has also displaced 1,427,370 persons and 181,600 houses have been partially damaged, while another 123,807 houses totally damaged, according to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.
Also, 176,852 hectares of farmlands are said to have been partially damaged and 392,399 hectares totally damaged.
