Gunmen who have threatened the peace and paralyzed the economy of the South Eastern states of the country since the past one year continued their operations on Sunday killing a Chinese citizen and four others in Ebonyi and Enugu States.
Reports gathered has it that the Chinese expatriate was shot dead by the gunmen after disarming his police escorts at a mining site in Iboko, Izzi local government of Ebonyi State.
It could not be ascertained on the condition why the expatriate and his security guards were attacked but it was learnt that his corpse was recovered by security operatives after the attack and deposited at a mortuary in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The state police command has yet to speak on the development.
Another report on the activities of the dare-devil gunmen from Enugu West zone on Sunday, said the Inyi police station in Oji River local government area was attacked.
Sources said two policemen and two civilians were shot dead in the incident.
The gunmen reportedly stormed the station Sunday morning and set the police station on fire.
Eyewitness account said the unknown gunmen were chanting “No election, No Police in Biafra land.”
One of the two people killed was said to be a police officer on duty when the hoodlums attacked the station.
A viral video of the incident seen on Sunday afternoon shows a building being used as a police station on fire and the bodies of two young men lying by the perimeter fence of the station.
Voices at the background of the video identified one of the bodies as that of a policeman while it is not clear whether the second person was a policeman or not.
Some voices identified the two victims as policemen, but another person said he could only identify one of them as a policeman attached to the station.
A resident of Arum Inyi where the police station is located confirmed the attack.
The source who noted that he left the community on Saturday for Enugu, said, “I got information from my community a few hours ago that unknown gunmen attacked the police station in my town, and that they killed one police officer. Right now I don’t have further details.”
Meanwhile, a security alert being circulated on social media platforms in the Enugu State capital warned residents of Inyi, Achi, Ufuma, Umunze, Ajali and Arondizuogu to be careful and security conscious in their areas because of the resurgence of gunmen activities.
The alert read, “Warning! Achi, Inyi, Oji-River, Ufuma, Umunze, Ajari, Arondiizogu those axis are facing security challenges, Ngwo Iri sons & daughters, lets always be security cautious and avoid night movement, above all, always commits our going out & coming in into the Blood of Almighty Jesus Christ the savior.”
Efforts to get the reactions from Ebonyi and Enugu state police commands on the two incidents were not successful by press time
