Ekiti state governor, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, has described the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Oluwafunminiyi Afuye, as sad and unbelievable.
The speaker died on Wednesday at the age of 66 at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital after suffering cardiac arrest.
Mr Oyebanji in a statement on Wednesday said he is yet to come to terms with the passing of the speaker whom he said joined him on inspection of roads on Tuesday.
“I am yet to come to terms with the news of the passing of my dear friend and brother, Rt. Hon. Funminiyi Afuye, Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly. It is quite unbelievable, because Rt. Hon. Afuye was in his usual lively mood when he joined me and other State officials on road inspection on Tuesday.
“With his death, Ekiti has lost an illustrious son, a perfect gentleman and a champion of democracy and rule of law. My heart bleeds over the loss of this great leader whose pragmatic leadership style helped to stabilise the state Assembly and build harmonious working relationship between the executive and legislative arms.
“While we cannot question God, we take solace in the fact Hon. Afuye lived an impactful life and left behind a legacy of service.
“My condolences to members of his immediate and extended family and the people of Ikere-Ekiti. May God grant him eternal rest and grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” the governor said.
