A strong earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck off Italy’s Adriatic coast early Wednesday, but caused no serious damage or injuries, according to preliminary accounts.
The earthquake, which lasted several seconds, was at a depth of around 10 km, 64 miles east of scenic Rimini, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
The large tremor was felt in northern Italy, including Bologna, Romagna, and Rome, as well as other nations such as Croatia and San Marino.
The earthquake’s epicenter was reported 35 kilometers (22 miles) offshore from Pesaro, a seaside city in the eastern Marche region, according to the Italian Geophysics and Volcanology Institute (INGV).
According to an Italian Civil Protection spokesman, the quake caused no severe damage or casualties, however cracks were detected in buildings.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office said she has been “in constant contact” with Civil Protection authorities and the head of the Marche region to follow developments.
