Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently holding a townhall meeting with the Agro and commodity groups in Niger state.
The meeting will avail the APC candidate the opportunity to share his plans with the farmers and other agro stakeholders in the state.
In his opening remark, Simon Lalong, DG presidential campaign council, said the townhall meeting is an opportunity to tell Nigerians about the renewed hope APC presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is bringing to Agriculture.
He added that the APC Presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is poised to drive farming activities from subsistence farming to mechanised farming in Nigeria
Mr Lalong said the presidential campaign council has created the Agro Commodity directorate because farmers have the numbers to decide the next president of Nigeria.
On his part, national chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, said Agriculture is the largest employer of labour in Nigeria.
Senator Adamu said adding value to agricultural produce will move more farmers out of poverty and increase productivity.
“The future of Nigeria is to eat what we produce and produce what we eat. It is a shame that Nigeria’s economy is import-driven,” Adamu said.
The media office of the Presidential candidate had on Sunday, in a statement announced his engagement with another strategic sector of the Nigerian economy, with a Town Hall meeting in Minna, Niger State on Monday.
According to the state, along with his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, Tinubu will meet farmers and the agro commodity groups in the state, which is notable for being a breadbasket of Nigeria.
Governor Abubakar Bello will host the meeting and the candidates.
Tinubu is expected to share his agenda on how he plans to build on the salutary foundation laid by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration in agricultural sector.
He will tell the farmers about how he will help them and their communities “in new and significant ways that usher in a true and complete rebirth of Nigerian agriculture”.
Among what the APC candidate promises, according to his Action Plan, are ramping up the cultivation of the nation’s arable land from 35 percent to 65 percent and the establishment of commodity board for strategic crops, such as cashew, cocoa, cassava, soya, rubber and groundnut.
As envisioned, the commodity board will improve price certainty for farmers and increase their capacity to produce more staple food to feed Nigeria’s burgeoning population.
The Minna Town Hall meeting is the second by Tinubu, following the successful meeting with Nigeria’s business leaders on Tuesday last week in Lagos.
Similar town hall meetings are scheduled for Lafia in Nasarawa state and Calabar, Cross River state, in the next few days before the mega rally in Jos on 15 November.
