Nigeria’s Information minister, Lai Mohammed says the security alert issued in October by the United States Embassy in Nigeria has terrorised Nigerians and set the nation in panic mood.
The minister who addressed a security gathering in Kaduna on Friday acknowledged Americas right to issue an advisory to her citizens but he says ‘’it must not be to the extent of a scaremongering’’
He said no responsible government will swallow such report hook line and sinker considering the fact that it comes from a foreign nation.
He strongly stated that the Federal government has full confidence in her intelligence and security agencies capability to gather and promptly act on intelligence in order to manage security threats.
According to Mr Lai Muhammed, no apology will be issued by the Federal Government despite criticisms and Nigeria will continue to act to protect her sovereignty.
The United States embassy in Abuja had issued a Security alert in Abuja in October saying a Terrorist attack was imminent in the Nigerian capital Abuja.
The Security alert was followed by an evacuation of the personnel of the embassy deemed not essential staff.
The alert by the Embassy of the United States on a possible terror attack in Abuja was followed by another from the British embassy, while several Other European Countries also issued travel advisory against coming to Nigeria for their citizens.
Though the days have passed by with no attack recorded many Nigerians have been calling on the Federal Government to do more to address the issue of Insecurity across the Country which has witnessed unprecedented breaches at all levels in the last few years.
This renewed show of confidence by the Federal Government in the abilities of the Nations’ intelligence and Security establishment to counter the alleged threats posed by the reported imminent may not be enough to increase the level of confidence felt by citizens and residents in the Country.
This lack of confidence was also alluded to by the Minister in his speech where he called for the rebuilding of the bridges between the government and the governed.
