Governor Samuel Ortom has appealed to indigenes of Benue State, especially those in the diaspora to support the Government in providing logistics to the Community Volunteer Guards and other security agencies in the State.
Governor Ortom made the appeal in Makurdi while presenting vehicles and motorcycles to Volunteer Guards, Livestock Guards and traditional rulers.
23 Pickup vehicles and 460 Motorcycles for the Community Volunteer Guards, 2 security vehicles and 30 motorcycles for the Livestock Guards and 279 motorcycles for district and clan heads.
These form part of the support the state government is providing to fight insecurity.
Since the launch of the Community Volunteer Guards, the security outfit has worked with the conventional security agencies to halt activities of criminal elements across the state.
Governor Ortom appeals to the people not to be hostile to security personnel in their domains, saying cases of misconduct should be reported to the appropriate authorities.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, and traditional leaders, who spoke on behalf of the district and clan heads all thanked the Governor for the vehicles and assured that they will be used judiciously.
The Governor acknowledges that his government has enjoyed peace, understanding and synergy despite all the economic and security upheavals that the state has faced.
Benue is one of the State in the Country that has faced serious Security Challenges from suspected criminal masquerading as herdsmen who have wrecked havoc across the State destroying farmlands and maiming farmers and Villagers.
This attacks according to observers is one of the reasons behind food price inflation across the Country with the State fondly referred to as the Food basket and Other food producing areas across the Country coming under sustained attacks from criminal herdsmen.
The attacks were also blamed as the main reason behind the defection of the Benue State Governor, Samue Ortom, from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party in the period leading up to the 2019 Elections.
