Nigeria Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya has again called on personnel of the Nigeria Army to support the civil authority to ensure the Security of the 2023 general election is conducted in a peaceful atmosphere.
The Army Chief stated this at the closing of the 2022 Chief of Army Staff annual conference held in Sokoto.
He urged the officers yo remain apolitical and conduct themselves in a professional manner before, during and after the election.
He also call on the various commanders yo sustain the tempi in the fight against terrorists and all forms of criminality across the country.
The Chief of Army Staff conference is coming against the background of the nation facing unprecedented Security challenges from various sources and Sundry Non-State actors.
The challenges vary across the Length and Breadth of Nigeria from the North which has Bandits in the North West to Terrorists of the Boko Haram, Ansarul and ISWAP and the South where the South East Currently has the Unknown Gunmen and members of the IPOB/ESN and Kidnappers, the South South with Oil Thieves and Kidnappers and the South West with Criminal Herdsmen, Kidnappers and Others.
The Army is under enormous pressure to ensure that the nation is secured for the 2023 Elections and the subsequent handover of power by the Muhammadu Buhari Led administration.
The holding of the Conference in Sokoto State where the Army Chief is from and the proximity to the Electioneering period is a show of support and establishment of a platform to ensure their is a discourse on how to address some of the challenges.
The aftermath of the Conference which also had in attendance President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to lead to more robust security arrangements to address both the oncoming 2023 Elections and the current Security Challenges facing the Country.
