Residents of Lagos and other states in Nigeria are groaning under their excruciating heat of the country’s continuing fuel scarcity.
On Tuesday, transport fares rose by 100 percent as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and oil marketers battle to find
a lasting solution to the fuel shortage.
The chairman of the petroleum products retail outlets Owners Association of Nigeria system 2E Eastern Zone, Sunny Nkpe says instead of issuing an ultimatum, the DSS should go after the cartel operating among private Depot owners hoarding petrol to end fuel queue.

Meanwhile, commercial drivers in Lagos have completely phased out 50 and 100 naira fares as no distance no matter how short is less than 200 naira.
Reacting to this development on journalists’ hangout, veteran journalist, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju said “our people are in trouble because there is one thing that these guys in the oil sector are known for ‘dishonest’, they will never tell Nigerians the truth.
” I do not see how fuel scarcity will linger except there are supply issues. If supply tapers down, it can trigger a level of scarcity, which can be exploited by marketers to cause serious scarcity.
He stated that the NNPC has to admit that the stock of PMS has gone down.
Mr Otitoju added that the country makes use of petrol a lot more during yuletide than any other time in the year, therefore, if supply tapers down, there will be disruptions in the supply chain but NNPC is not willing to tell Nigerians the truth.
“In 2017 when we had a very when we had a very serious scarcity similar to this, this was how they were lying to us until the Senate organised a public hearing where it was revealed that supply had tapered down for months”.
Mr Otitoju said NNPC does not deserve to treat Nigerians in this manner noting that there was too much dishonesty.
“You won’t tell Nigerians the truth, we don’t even know the truth as per our level of consumption on a daily basis and everybody is wondering what is happening.
“Badagry to Mile 2 which costs 400 before has gone up to 1,000 naira while Agbara to Mile 2 which used to be between 300 and 400 naira is now 700 naira and so on.
“Commercial drivers have phased out 50 to 100 fares, they have to bill you higher to be able to cover up for cost of fuel.
“Somebody should be made to pay for subjecting Nigerians to this hardship.
Reacting further on the issue, Publisher, Global Excellence Magazine, Mayor Akinpelu said Nigerians are suffering for the incompetency of the President who is the minister for petroleum products.
He added that there is so much inefficiency in the NNPC that the President who is the minister for petroleum, it seems is incapable of calling them to order.
They tell us the NNPC is the sole importer of petroleum products which is not completely true.
“The Depot owners are not buying the products at the price they are supposed to buy”.
“Government has to face the reality that Nigerians are not buying at the rate they are supposed to but because elections are coming and government cannot afford to increase the rate of PMS, they look the other way.
On the way out of the situation, Mr Otitoju said except enough supply is brought into the country within the next few days, Nigerians would suffer.
