The slow pace of Judicial process in Nigeria has been blamed for the Congestion in Custodial and Correctional Facilities across the Country.
The Director of the Justice Project Abimbola Ojenike made this disclosure while speaking to TVC News Breakfast Show on Friday Morning.
Mr Ojenike who was reacting to the news of the decision by the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, planning to fast track the release of 30 percent of all inmates in the Nations’ Custodial and Correctional Facilities said the meeting is long overdue.
He added that most inmates in the Custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service have no clue as to why they are in Custody.
He made a case for a situation where any person who has been arrested is taken before a Court of competent jurisdiction to know why they were arrested describing the current practice as very unfair on the inmates.
He called for a reform of the Criminal Justice system where whatever your plea before the Courts you are remanded and may be in Custody for longer than your supposed offence.
According to him, the ideal situation in any judicial system is that people who have no business with the Criminal Justice system should not be arrested, wondering why somebody will be arrested for any commercial dispute or a malicious report by anybody and be remanded in Custody of the Correctional Service.
He said the current system is horrendous and anomalous to fairness and Justice in any nation.
He said the Police procedure for arrests should be reformed in a way that nobody is kept in Custody for a Non-Criminal Offence that can be settled or resolved amicably at the level of the Police Station without detention.
Going Further, he disclosed that the Justice Project is working with all agencies of Government that is involved in the Criminal Justice system to help in decongesting the Custodial Centres across the Country especially those who are already in custody.
He added that the Focus will soon shift from providing instant relief for people who are already in Custodial Centres of 74825 people with 70 percent of this population all awaiting trial inmates.
He added that the old remand system that is still in operation should be changed to make it easier for people who have been granted bail to meet the condition and go home.
