Justice Ibrahim Yusuf of Kwara state high Court has sentenced three accused persons to death by hanging over rape and murder of a 300 level undergraduate of the University of Ilorin, Omowumi Blessing Olajide.
Two other accused persons were sentenced to six years in prison while three were discharged and acquitted.
Owowunmi Blessing Olajide was raped and murdered at her Tanke residence around University of Ilorin on the 2nd of June, 2021.
Eight suspects including accomplices were arrested by operatives of the Department of the State Security (DSS) in connection with the crime.
Abdulazeez Ismail, Ajala Moses Oluwatimileyin and Oyeyemi Timileyin Omogbolahan are the major suspects accused of raping and murdering Omowumi.
The trio alongside two others were also accused of stealing Owomumi’s property and withdrawing money from her account while three others involved in using Omowumi’s stolen phone to make calls were also co-defendants in the case.
Delivering his 165-page judgement, Justice Ibrahim Yusuf found the trio of Azeez Ismail, Ajala Moses Oluwatimileyin and Oyeyemi Timileyin Omogbolah of rape, robbery and culpable homicide.
He sentenced them to death by hanging.

The late Omowumi Blessing Olajide was a 300 level undergraduate of the University of Ilorin and was leaving with Dr Dupe Shittu before she was killed.
The case started in July last year.
Her death in June 2021 led to many theories until the arrest of 8 persons a few days after by the Department of State Services.
The people in Kwara State have since held their breath as to what will happen following the commencement of the trial of the accused persons who reportedly raped and thereafter murdered her and also stole her personal belongings including her mobile phone.
