An independent study on the stock on the state of Nigeria’s embassies and consulates has recommended the establishment of a special trust fund for acquisition of equipment and maintenance of the embassies and consulates.
It also recommended that at least 20 percent of revenues generated from Consular services domiciled in the embassies should be used to run it.

The state of Nigerian missions abroad have come under scrutiny on
several occasions, many citizens have registered their disappointment in the facilities and poor services provided.
Recently, the Foreign Affairs committee at the House of Representatives invited the Minister of Foreign Affairs to explain why the missions have remained in a constant state of neglect.
The research study and report by the National Association of Sea Dogs is timely and could help government in decision making and
reforms this independently funded.
The current status of Nigeria’s missions as described in the report is caused by challenges of poor funding, inadequate staff strength, low competence among staff, politicisation of foreign service, corruption and other factors.
The report suggests the need for the National Assembly to initiate legislative proposals for the establishment of a separate National
Foreign Service as well as place limits on the appointment of non-career ambassadors.
It also identifies the need for a radical restructuring of Nigeria’s foreign policy system including structures and institutions.
Embassies and consulates gives a perception of a country and the measure of prestige the country truly holds.
