Some leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council have paid a visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his Presidential Library penthouse in Abeokuta.
The team led by the Vice Presidential candidate and governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, the Director General of the Presidential Council and governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal and former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido
Others include, former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Cross River State governor, Liyel Imoke and Otunba Oyewole Fasawe.
Speaking after about two hours closed door session, Aminu Tambuwal said the team was in Abeokuta “to pay their usual respect and to continue to consult their leader, former President Olusegun Obasanjo on matters of national interest and they had a very fruitful conversation.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo officially left the Peoples Democratic Party in the Period leading up to the 2015 Election where he directed one of the leaders of the party in his Ibogun/Olaogun ward to tear his party membership card following disagreement between him and the hierarchy of the Peoples Democratic Party led by the then President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who lost to the opposition candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari now President Muhammadu Buhari.
He was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the party during the period and has vowed never to be involved in partisan Politics but rather play the role of an elder Statesman.
In the Period leading to the 2019 elections, he backed the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party who was also his former Deputy during the time of his Presidency between 1999-2007, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, whom he had a huge falling out with towards the end of the term together.
He is reportedly backing the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr Peter Obi, for the top Job this time.
The visit of the Peoples Democratic Party team may not be unconnected with the need to get him to support Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for a second time even if this may be far fetched.
