The governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, says that his state is 90 percent secure and safe for the elections, which will take place in Nigeria in the next 49 days.
As a result, he can ensure the electorate that they will be protected before, during, and after the elections.
The Governor gave the assurance in Abuja on Friday, after a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, at the Presidential Villa.
Borno state has in recent times grabbed headlines for electoral violence with the November 2022 attack on the PDP presidential campaign train in Maiduguri, the state capital.
The meeting with President Buhari also afforded the governor the opportunity to give an update on the rehabilitation and resettlement process for IDPs in the state.
Zulum while interacting with reporters covering the State House said: “There is no place without some level of security challenge; Borno State government had received support from the federal government and the military, and we have been able to make much progress at restoring the state to its former peaceful state.”
Commenting on the forthcoming general elections, Zulum stated: “People of Borno State voted during the 2015 elections. They also voted during the 2019 elections. Can you compare the security situation in 2019, 2011 and now? We can beat our chest to say that the security in Borno has improved tremendously by over 90%. So we don’t have any problem.”
Asked what he was doing to assure those afraid to go collect their PVCs because of insecurity as they may not be able to use it during the election, the Governor said:
“The People of Borno State voted during the 2015 election. They also voted during the 2019 election. Can you compare the security situation in 2019 and 2015 and now?
“The security situation has improved tremendously by over 90 percent so we don’t have any problem.
“Eligible voters can go and cast their votes on election day, Inshallah, in Borno State, we don’t have any problem.“
