The president of the court of Appeal has admonished staff of the election registry to ensure they are not used as weapons to truncate the electoral process.
She noted that they should not see the election petitions brought before the court as an opportunity to make money to enrich themselves but rather build the nation’s justice system.
She made this statement at the capacity building workshop for tribunal secretariat staff.
An election like all facets of human endeavour has its shortcomings as the conduct of the election processes come with some problems.
The need to correct the problems encountered in the electoral process brought about the birth of the Election Tribunal which has been adequately provided for in the Constitution and the Electoral Act, of 2022.
The Court of Appeal being the penultimate Court is empowered to establish such Tribunals and have the Registries opened at least seven (7) days before the election.
The Registry is saddled with the responsibility of receiving Petitions and other Court Processes for filing, Service of Court Processes timeously on Parties, issuance of Hearing Notices, preparation of Court Proceedings and Orders, custody and safekeeping of the tribunal processes.
This training will serve as a forum for participants to share experiences wherein guidance will be provided and strategies devised for the strengthening of the Tribunals.
It is important for them as they will familiarize themselves with the provisions of the Constitution, the Electoral Act, 2022 and the Practice Direction as it affects their performance at the Registry.
