President Muhammadu Buhari has cautioned foreign diplomats against meddling in Nigeria’s internal affairs especially as the country prepares for a general election.
Buhari gave the warning while receiving letters of credence from the ambassadors of Switzerland, Sweden, The Republic of Ireland, The kingdom of Thailand, The republic of Senegal, and the republic of south Sudan.
President Muhammadu Buhari says Nigeria is working with the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) to implement strategies to halt unconstitutional change of governments in the region.
President Buhari told the six new ambassadors that he wants friendly countries to support efforts to address the problem of insecurity, fight against corruption, and diversify the economy.
He emphasised Nigeria’s role as a leader in the West African area, as well as the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security. Nonetheless, he claims that Nigeria is collaborating with ECOWAS to adopt methods to stem the tide of unlawful government changes.
The President told the ambassadors that Nigeria, no doubt, enjoys very cordial and mutually beneficial bilateral relations and cooperation with their respective countries, commending the roles of their predecessors who demonstrated diligence and commitment to advance these causes.
Reacting to President Buhari’s statement, Olayinka Oyegbile, a journalist said foreign missions will not meddle in Nigeria’s internal affairs if the country does not take its problems to them.
According to him, Buhari in 2015 was in Chatham House, 2022 Atiku has been to Chatham House, Asiwaju has also been in Chatham House. LP Presidential Candidate Peter Obi will also be in Chatham House on the 15th of January.
“When you want to discuss problem of Nigeria, you go to Chatham House or London, or America and discuss it.
“Now, they want to talk about your election, you say they should not meddle meanwhile you are the one inviting them to meddle in your affairs.
“If you don’t want them to meddle in your Affairs, solve your problem at home.
Executive Director, Journalist for Democratic Rights (JODER) Adewale Adeoye stated that in international law, there is a principle of non-interference in the sovereignty of every nation.
He said Nigeria is an independent Sovereign Nation, and should be able to run its own affairs without external interference.
He added that in reality Nigeria is not truly independent as the country is heavily indebted to the west running into billions.
“If you are indebted to somebody, you are owing in one way or the other which means the person still holds the chains on your neck to control you politically economically and even spiritually”
“The European Union, Norway come to Nigeria to monitor elections and they call a press conference after it is over to tell the world how peaceful it was or otherwise.
Mr Adeoye noted that in reality, Nigeria is not totally free of western powers as they still have a strong hold on the country..
INEC still receives some level of funding from foreign countries as not all of it comes from the curlers of the country.
Economic and politically, Nigeria is still tied to the west.
