Schools, Restaurants and Owners of such places owe the people who use their facilities a duty of care and safety at all times where they are in such places or facilities.
The Ogun West Senatorial Candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party and Legal Practitioner, Olufemi Aina, made this known while speaking abut the death of a 12 year old student of the Chrisland School in Opebi, Ikeja Lagos, Whitney Adeniran.
Mr Aina who expressed regret at the seeming regular recurrence of issues like the death of Whitney Adeniran at Chrisland Schools and Other such facilities across the country condoled the family of Whitney.
He said what happened to her is every parent’s nightmare.
He called for better measures to address issues like this to ensure it does not happen again.
He said the way the issue was handled by the management of Chrisland Schools leaves a lot to be desired as to their level of care for pupils and people who use their facilities.
He made allusion to Other controversies surrounding the school before wondering what they are really up to.
He added that Children will always be Children and will play whatever anybody wants to say about them or to them.
He added that the School management did not for once during the course of the Statement it put out address the issue of measures put in place by them in the Inter House Sports Competition in case of emergency.
He asked whether measures were put in place after assessment of the risks inherent in where the event was going to take place or not saying the whole issue is disheartening.
He also said the school could have made use of parents as emergency personnel for the Children who will participate in the sports competition.
Going Further, Mr Aina said safety has never been paramount on the priority list of most people in Nigeria adding that once things like safety is taken lightly the kind of avoidable death like Whitney Adeniran’s will likely occur.
He disclosed that failure to address the fallout of the Whitney Adeniran Death will likely lead to other similar incidents.
The death of the 12 year old according to Mr Aina must be properly investigated to address concerns that the incident has raised.
Mr Aina said the lapses and loopholes in the safety protocol by the Chrisland High School are too many that the laid back attitude adopted by all those involved is shocking.
He said the issue goes beyond denying responsibility as its being done by the School pointing out that circumstantial evidence also needs to be taken into consideration.
He disclosed that all evidence point to the fact the incident is murder and does not need the clear cut matter of smoking gun as Americans will say.
He made an example of something that happened in the United States of America of a lady who encouraged her boyfriend to commit suicide and was eventually charged for murder.
He added that the School management left a lot to be desired in the way the safety and precautionary measures were handled in the period between the start and end of the Inter House Sports competition which ended in tragedy.
He advocated for the institution of a safety matrix that will class facilities, schools and Others according to their safety records.
He decried the way emergencies in the country have been handled making a reference to the incident involving the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa, was handled.
He urged Government at all levels and Nigerians to take safety consciousness serious.
He advised the Lagos State Government make an inquest into the incident to guard against future recurrence by putting in place measures to prevent it.
