Pope Francis has urged warring sides in Sudan to lay down their arms, expressing grief for the country’s ongoing violence for more than a month.
The Pope who renewed his heartfelt plea for weapons to be set aside called on the international community to spare no effort so that dialogue prevails and that the suffering of the people can be alleviated.
The fighting between Sudan’s army and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has led to a collapse of order.
The rival groups in Sudan signed an agreement late on Saturday for a seven-day ceasefire that is due to take effect on Monday evening.
The Pope said countries should not get acclimated to battle while calling for support for war-torn people of Ukraine.
According to the Vatican, the pope has invited Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, leader of the Italian bishops’ conference, to lead a peace mission to help stop the violence in Ukraine.
A Vatican diplomatic source said Zuppi would try to meet separately with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
