The Lagos Waste Management Authority insists it will not reopen the sealed markets of Oyingbo and alayabiagba until it complies with its sanitation laws.
Managing Director of the agency, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, warned that other markets engaging in irresponsible waste disposal and other environmental violations would face similar harsh consequences.
Traders here are making brisk sales outside, despite the closure of the market.
Oyingbo, a hub for both perishable and non perishable foods, was shut down for environmental infractions.
When our news crew arrived at the scene, Traders in the market pleaded for a reopening of the facility.
They claim the waste being deposited at the markets comes from surrounding areas and are not responsible for the infractions.
A top official from the waste management agency revealed that the market had been repeatedly warned to comply with the state’s sanitation laws, and oftentimes failed to engage waste collectors to clear the waste within its premises.
As both sides state their cases, Oyingbo market for now, remains under lock and key, serving as a stark reminder that keeping the city clean is a collective responsibility.
