The Lagos State Government has issued a stop work order on illegal jetties under construction without permit in the state, to ensure the safety of residents commuting along the waterfront corridor.
While serving the stop work order on the illegal jetty being constructed by a community in Ijegun Egba in Amuwo Odofin LGA on the representative of the community, the commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Hon Yacoob Ekundayo Alebiosu said, the jetty constructed by government is enough to serve the people of the area.
He said the safety of residents along the waterfront corridor is very important, therefore government will not allow self help which could jeopardise the safety of commuters especially school children who travel on water to school everyday.
While responding, the representative of the community who also stood in for the Olu of Ijegun Ibasa/Satellite Town, Oba Afeez Oriyomi Shittu; Aliu Alebiosu, received the stop work order on behalf of the community.
He also promised to abide by the decision of government and stop any further construction of the illegal jetty. He pleaded for more interventions from government, saying the two jetties constructed by government and serving 22 communities are inadequate
While fielding questions with newsmen after the inspection tour, the commissioner commended some of the project, Hon. Alebiosu however decried the level of work done on some other on-going projects.
He also reiterated zero tolerance for illegal dredging in state while also lamenting the ship wreckage along the waterways.
