In an effort to maintain a cordial working relationship, the Senate Committee on Army has given the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja a copy of its “Legislative Agenda” for the army.
The presentation was given by Mr. Abdulaziz Musa Yar’adua, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, while the committee was visiting the Army Headquarters in Abuja for the first time.
Senator Yar’adua took advantage of the opportunity to commend the Nigerian army’s efforts to reduce the country’s security challenges, while assuring the Chief and his men that they will ensure that all the tools required to carry out assigned tasks effectively are made available to personnel through legislation.
He stated during the meeting with the Chief of Army Staff and Principal Staff Officers of the Nigerian Army that the committee’s visit was primarily to present the Senate’s ‘Legislative Agenda’ for the army to the Chief of Army Staff.
The Legislative agenda contains a blueprint of what the committee intends to achieve through its allocated tenure as Senate Committee on Army.
The Senate Committee Chairman pledged to ensure that the Nigerian army gets the needed funding to enable it succeed in all its operations and activities and to improved welfare for personnel.
He further stated that the visit afforded them the opportunity to have insight into the operational engagements of the army and its needs.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS,) Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja while welcoming members of the Committee said the Nigerian Army recognises the critical role of the Committee, while expressing appreciation for the warm support that the Nigerian Army has received since the inauguration of the house.
General Lagbaja promised to continue working with the committee because the effectiveness of the Nigerian Army is dependent on adequate appropriation by the legislature, which is critical to all of its operations.
As a result, the COAS assured the Senate Committee that the Nigerian army will continue to conduct operations in the field to combat the country’s numerous security challenges.
