A coalition of advocates pushing for improved funding on immunization are seeking the urgent release of funds from the current 2023 immunization budget worth sixty billion Naira.
They worry that the unreleased funds will expire by 31st of December leaving out the procurement of vaccines and devices which will translate to a vaccine shortages and a resurgence of vaccine preventable diseases in the country.
Vaccination provides the longest lasting and most effective protection against diseases which can lead to life threatening complications for the vulnerable population
Vaccine preventable diseases account for 20 percent of morbidity and mortality of children under the age of 5
Time ticks as the year gradually comes to an end , and these experts seek that the country sustains the momentum of the nation’s immunization efforts through preventing a resurgence of vaccine preventable diseases.
They are extremely concerned as they push for the swift release of funds for immunization by the accountant general of the federation.
Although there has been an increase in the immunization budget from 69 billion Naira in 2023 to 137 billion Naira in the proposed 2024 budget, the group still urges for the release of the 2023 funds to adequately curtail the likelihood of a vaccine shortage.
The delayed release of immunization funds jeopardizes the progress made in controlling infectious diseases and poses a direct threat to the health and well-being of those who are most in need.
