The Supreme Court has affirmed the election of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as governor of Lagos State.
Justice Garba Lawal who read the lead judgment dismissed the appeal filed by Mr Rhodes-Vivour.
He held that the deputy governor was duly qualified to contest the election
The deputy governor’s acquisition of United States citizenship did not disqualify him from contesting the election since he is a citizen Nigeria citizen by birth
A Nigerian citizen by birth who acquires the citizenship of another country does not deny him the right to contest an election.
By virtue of Section 29 of the constitution the person only loses his right if he renounces his Nigerian citizenship.
Pledging allegiance to another country does not take away any of your rights if you are a Nigerian citizen by birth.
The court also dismissed the appeal filed by the PDP and its governorship candidate Azeez Adeniran
Justice Adamu Jahiro who read the lead judgment held that the appeal is academic.
