The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris has said that the ongoing and accelerated development of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project marks a crucial milestone in unlocking the vast economic potential of Northern Nigeria.
During a site visit to the River Kaduna AKK Gas Pipeline Project on Friday, accompanied by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, the Minister of State for Gas Resources, Mr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, and the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, Mele Kyari, Idris highlighted the transformative impact of the project.
“The AKK project is centered on harnessing the vast economic potential of Northern Nigeria. The gas transported through this pipeline will provide essential energy for homes, businesses, and industries, and will also facilitate more affordable transportation,” Idris stated.
He emphasized that the continuation and acceleration of this significant domestic gas pipeline project by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration demonstrates the President’s dedication to the industrialization and economic advancement of every region in Nigeria.
Praising the project as a vital component of Nigeria’s industrialization and economic prosperity agenda, Idris noted that it stands as the largest domestic gas pipeline initiative in the country to date.
He also drew attention to the crucial relationship between economic development and security, asserting that many security issues in Northern Nigeria are rooted in economic deprivation, which can be mitigated through job creation and economic growth.
“Energizing homes, farms, and industries is essential for large-scale job creation,” Idris remarked, emphasizing the project’s potential to significantly enhance the agricultural value chain, which is the economic foundation of Northern Nigeria.
Idris pointed out the nationwide benefits of similar projects, mentioning the recent commissioning of three critical gas infrastructure projects in the Niger Delta.
He announced that another visit would be made to Rivers State to inspect the OB3 Pipeline River Niger Crossing Project, another transformative gas initiative.
The Minister highlighted that the AKK pipeline would support the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), which has already attracted over USD 50 million in private investments.
“This initiative aims to establish CNG conversion and refueling facilities nationwide, furthering Nigeria’s commitment to utilizing its abundant gas resources,” he stated.
Idris expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s vision for the “Decade of Gas,” which seeks to harness Nigeria’s gas resources for comprehensive national development.
“The AKK pipeline project is a symbol of hope, promising to rejuvenate, restore, and revitalize economic opportunities for all Nigerians,” he concluded.
