The ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff has proposed an estimate of $2,606,695,640 per year for a brigade of 5000 soldiers as the cost of keeping a standby force against terrorism and unlawful changes of government in the region.
A meeting of all Ministers of Defence and Finance in the Ecowas Region was held.
The purpose is to deliberate on the modalities for financing and equipping the deployment of the Ecowas counter terrorism force
This is also to fulfil the mandate given by the Authority of Heads of State and Government in December of 2023, to set up a regional standby force against terrorism and unconstitutional change of Government
High cases of terrorism has further deepened insecurity and Humanitarian challenges in the region, the 2024 Global terrorism index indicates Mali and Burkina Faso are top 5 countries with high death rates from Terrorism, one of the key findings from the report also says the epicenter of terrorism has shifted from the Middle East and into the Central Sahel region of Sub Sharan Africa
