Local Government Chairmen in Rivers State are insisting that their decision to remain in office after the expiration of their three-year tenure is backed by law.
As a group, they also condemned the Governor’s appointment of caretaker committees while reacting to the recent developments in Port Harcourt.
These embattled council chairmen are not backing down despite pressure on them to vacate office.
They say this fight is not about desperation for power but respect for
the rule of law.
According to them, everyone should wait for the court to have the final say on the amended law by the Martin Amaewhule led house of assembly, which extended their tenure.
They described the appointment of caretaker committees to run the local government areas as an act of illegality.
They also raised alarm over alleged plans by Labour unions to stage a
politically sponsored protest against the police.
Despite the opposition to their appointment, the caretaker leadership
says all committees of the Local Government Councils have been
dissolved, but this group wants the public to disregard that
announcement.
