The Nigeria centre for disease control and prevention says 10 states are currently responsible for 90 percent of all recorded cholera cases in the country with 7 of them located in the southern region.
This was revealed at a meeting in Abuja when an update on the current state of the cholera outbreak in the country was provided.
In June, the Nigeria Centre for diseases control and prevention placed the country at high risk due to the increased risk of cholera transmission and impact.
It also activated the national cholera multi sectoral emergency operations centre to coordinate the national response across affected states.
Since then, the NCDC has remained active in addressing the current outbreak.
Today, the NCDC is giving an update on its response effort.
So far, 2,102 suspected cases and 63 deaths have been recorded across 33 states and 122 local government areas with a case fatality rate of 3.0 percent since the beginning of the year.
The disease control agency highlights some of the challenges faced, with open defecation being one of the major contributors.
NCDC says it will continue to put pressure on state governments for the need to prioritise action for solutions that will ensure access to safe water,basic sanitation and proper hygiene practices.
