The Senator Representing Imo East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi, has defected from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress.
His defection was announced by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, at plenary shortly before the start of consideration of the new national minimum wage bill.
Senator Ezenwa, who was reelected on the platform of the Labour Party at the last General election says the reason for his defection is as a result of irreconcilable differences within the party.
Governor of Imo State , Senator Hope Uzodinma, also visited the Senate chamber to witness the defection and welcomed the Development.
Senator Ezenwa was also immediately allotted another seat on the opposite side of the divide in the Senate Chamber to solidify his defection.
His defection from the Labour Party now swells the ranks of the APC in the Senate and increased their numbers to 61 ,as they still hold the majority status in the Senate .
The number of political parties represented in the Senate is now 6.
Also at the House of Representatives, a member from Kogi State Salman Idris, defected from his former party, the ADC to the All Progressives Congress.
He represents Kabba-Bunu/ Ijumu Federal Constituency.
