Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, says the majority of flood events that have been reported to date are flash floods or urban floods brought on by prolonged periods of intense rainfall combined with inadequate and clogged drainage systems in urban areas, rather than dam releases.
He maintained that water is still being impounded into the reservoirs of the Kainji and Jebba Dams on the River Niger.
Shiroro Dam on river Kaduna is equally impounding water with no release of water yet from any of the Dams within and outside Nigeria.
The minister also revealed that River Flooding is expected to begin this month
Some states likely to be impacted within this as predicted are: Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Adamawa, Benue, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Jigawa, Kogi, Kebbi, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Ondo, Ogun, Rivers, and Taraba.
The ministry say it will continue to monitor the development on the River Benue Sub-Basin with Wuroboki in Adamawa State as the first monitoring station where the flow from the upstream Cameroun is received.
