The situation for those who were internally displaced and seeking refuge in the eastern Kassala province of Sudan has become more dire due to flooding.
Persons were calling for assistance in what was known as the Industrial School, one of Kassala’s largest camps for internally displaced persons, according to Senegalese internal refugee Ali Abdul Jabbar.
“We arrived from Sennar and have been residing in an area known as the Industrial School for 20 days. The rain and water conditions can be observed. We are not facing any issues. Once our accommodations are repaired, we will move there. The current conditions can be witnessed. We urge the authorities to address this issue promptly.” they said.
In Kassala, individuals trudged through knee-deep floodwater, clutching onto their saved possessions.
Meanwhile, some opted to relax on dry land after abandoning partially drowned tents.
According to the Sudanese Ministry of Health, at least 12 persons have perished in eastern Sudan as a result of floods that began on Saturday and swamped homes and tents.
Sudan was thrown into chaos in April of last year, when long-standing tensions between the military and the RSF flared up into violent riots in Khartoum and other parts of the country.
According to the United Nations, the conflict has killed over 14,000 people and injured 33,000 more, while activists say the actual figures are higher.
This conflict has led to the largest displacement crisis globally, with more than 11 million people being displaced from their homes.
