Andriy Kostin, the prosecutor general of Ukraine, has announced his resignation, following a domestic crisis in which dozens of officials are accused of abusing their position to get handicap status and escape military duty.
The resignation came after the National Security and Defense Council met and officials talked about how to combat corruption and find ways to acquire deferrals from the draft.
Allegations against dozens of local officials, including prosecutors, who are accused of abusing their positions to get disability status have recently shaken Kostin’s office.
Following the security council meeting, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a strongly worded statement published on social media, saying, “The Prosecutor General must take political responsibility for the situation in the prosecution bodies of Ukraine.”
Kostin’s resignation statement followed minutes later.
The prosecutor called the situation around the false disability diagnoses “clearly amoral” and agreed with Zelenskyy about the need for personal responsibility.
