Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) have long been a lifeline for expectant mothers, especially in communities where healthcare facilities are scarce.
At their 2025 convention in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, over 4,000 TBAs gathered, sharing stories of how they’ve saved lives. But while their role is undeniable, experts say their practice needs regulation and training.
Governor Umo Eno says he’s stepping in, promising to train, certify, and integrate TBAs into the primary healthcare system. They’ll also help enroll pregnant women in health insurance, a move seen as a game-changer.
