Former President of European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pottering said the framework and guidelines of the European union is what has made it strong. He said any member country that wants to break off, must pay the penalty.
Pottering disclosed this while making a presentation in Abuja on the ‘Roles of Parliaments in Supranational Communuties, a case study of the European Union’.
Moyo Thomas reports that the founding principles of the European Union has been the bedrock upon which it’s democracy was built.
ECOWAS as a regional body suffers many challenges, key among which is the domestication of its treaties in member countries. Nigeria alone has about 400 treaties it is signatory to but are yet to be domesticated.
This has limited the strength of ECOWAS when compared to other regional bodies like the European Union
The parliament plays an important role in the supranational communities, if all signied treaties get domesticated it strengthens regional bodies and Multilateralism
