President Donald Trump has become the third U.S. president to be impeached as the House of Representatives formally charged him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in a historic step that will inflame partisan tensions across a deeply divided America.
The Democratic-led House’s passage of two articles of impeachment on a mostly party-line vote sets the stage for a trial next month in the Senate on whether to convict and remove him from office.

The abuse of power article was passed on a 230-197 vote. The obstruction article was passed by 229-198.
But House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi suggested she may delay the formal transmission of two articles of impeachment against President Trump, until she sees how Republicans in the Senate are likely to play their hand.
U.S. House Speaker, Nancy Peolosi said: “…We cannot name managers until we see what the process is on the Senate side, and I would hope that would be soon, as we did with our legislation, our Resolution 660, to describe what the process would be.
So far, we haven’t anything that looks fair to us. So, hopefully, it will be fairer and when we see what that is we’ll send our managers.”
Reacting , Allan Lichtman, American University Professor of History said: “The articles are like an indictment. They’re just a charge. Those charges are then tried in the Senate, presided over as judge by Chief Justice John Roberts and all 100 senators sitting as jurors. And it takes a two thirds vote, 67 senators, to convict and remove the president.”
Meanwhile, embattled President Trump condemned the Democratic-led impeachment vote against him, irked that he made U.S. history in a bad way but assured that Republicans in the Senate will save him from being ousted.
“With today’s illegal, unconstitutional and partisan impeachment, the do nothing Democrats, and they are do nothing. All they want to do is focus on this. What they could be doing, are declaring their deep hatred and disdain for the American voter. This lawless partisan impeachment is a political suicide march for the Democrat Party. Have you seen my polls in the last four weeks? It’s crazy,” Trump said.
