The frequency of road accidents involving tricycles and cars in Yobe state capital, Damaturu, has become a source of worry to residents. Road traffic officials said the accidents are majorly caused by disobedience to traffic rules and regulations .
The recent installation of traffic lights by the state Government across Damaturu, has not changed the road culture of tricycle operators and
vehicle drivers.
Rather, it has led to a gradual increase in accidents due simple disobedience to traffic laws. This often resulted in loss of lives, while luckier victims escape with minor or serious injuries.
The frequency of traffic related accidents has prompted Governor Mai Mala Buni to approve the establishment of Yobe Road Traffic Agency, (YOROTA).
The Traffic agency is also suggesting that emergency routes be created across the state, since it is also a theatre of operations for security operatives. It is expected that the establishment of YOROTA would curtail the frequent accidents in Damaturu.
