Anambra state has confirmed its first case of Lassa fever outbreak, making it the 21st state with recorded cases of the virus, in Nigeria.
The patient who is a student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka was said to have been on admission at the University’s clinic for some days, before she was referred to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital.
The chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of the hospital, Ifeanyichukwu Ezebialu, who confirmed this, says decontamination of the ward where the patient was nursed in the hospital, had been done.
She has now been transferred to the Virology Centre in Ebonyi State and handed over to the federal government, for treatment.
According to the National Centre for Disease Control, the disease has so far claimed 41 lives, in the recent outbreak.
Other states with recorded cases of the disease are Ondo, Edo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Kano, Borno, Nasarawa, Kogi, Rivers. Abia state is also one, as well as, Adamawa, Jigawa, Benue, Kaduna, Delta, Taraba, Plateau, Bauchi, Osun and Ogun.
