Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has called for the recognition the Police Service Commission in checking the excesses of Police officers. Reports of abuse of power, extra judicial killings, extortion and other infractions involving policemen seem to be on the rise lately, as police are becoming unfriendly to the citizenry they are meant to protect.
Not all incidents of injustice meted out by policemen are reported. The most recent incident is the unlawful arrest and brutal torture of a group of motor mechanics in portharcourt , leading to the death of one.
This is why a group has shifted focus to the police service commission and believed it has the capacity to maintain decent police force. The police force and the police service commission are currently locked in a superiority contest and the matter is yet to be settled by a court of law.
The police have always maintained that they have an internal mechanism to discipline erring officers but it seems this has not deterred other.
