FCT to enjoy Bulk Power from 6 Power Projects

The Federal Government has reiterated it’s commitment to improving bulk electricity supply in the Federal Capital Territory, with it’s six power projects, which were designed to add 1,000 megawatts (MW) as all of them are at completion stage.

The Minister of Power Abubakar Aliyu gave the assurance during an inspection tour of the projects alongside the managing director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Sule Abdulaziz.

The Minister disclosed that the Abuja project is being supported by the French Development Agency (AFD), an international donor organisation, with the loan of 170million dollars

This is to be used to improve the system’s operational capacity towards improved and sustainable power supply in the FCT and environs.

The move to increase and improve on Power Supply within the FCT by the Federal Government is part of efforts aimed at adding an additional 1,000 Megawatts to ensure the enhancement of Commerce and Business within the Territory.

The move is another in the series of efforts being made across the three legs of the power value chain by the Federal Government of Nigeria since 2015.

The government has made efforts in enhancing the capacity of the Transmission Company of Nigeria to be able to transmit power from the various generating stations across the Country.

The capacity of the Transmission Company of Nigeria as of 2015 when the Muhammadu Buhari administration assumed office was about 4500 Megawatts and the aim then was to increase it to over 20,000 Megawatts through a combination of projects especially the completion of the long abandoned National Integrated Power Projects that started under the Presidency of Former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

The government has also gone a long way in completing the Zungeru Power Project with two of the Turbines at the Hydropower Station already online and producing electricity to the National Power Grid while the remaining are expected to come on stream by the end of the year.
