The Rivers state house of assembly has re-elected the lawmaker representing Andoni constituency Ikuiyi Owaji-Ibani as its new speaker.
Owaji-Ibani had conceded the position to the out-going speaker,Dabatoru Adams following the nullification of his election before being re-elected in the last rerun.
TVC News Edmond Awadje reports that the house had reconvened after passing the 2017 budget of 470 billion
naira presented by governor Nyesom Wike to swear in twelve newly elected members after the rerun election of December 10th.
Included is the member representing Port Harcourt constituency 1, Victoria Nyeche who had waited till now even after the court had ordered that she be sworn in.
It was immediately after the new members took their oath of office and sworn in that the former speaker, Dabotorudima Adams announced his resignation.
It was Deputy speaker, and member representing Abua Odua constituency, Mashal Uwom who presided over the election of a new speaker, Ikuiyi Owaji-Ibani after he was nominated. 23 members out of 32 voted in his
favour.
Owaji-Ibani who assumed duty immediately, thanked members for the trust and unflinching support accorded him. He urged the newly sworn in members to settle down for purposeful representation of their constituencies.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Port Harcourt constituency 1 has expressed her readiness to ensure effective representation of her constituency.
For now, the Rivers state house of assembly has adjourned sitting till Monday the 16th of January, 2017.
