The federal government has inaugurated state selection committees for its special works programme ahead of October when 774,000 unskilled and itinerant workers are expected to be recruited for three months across all local government areas in the country.
In the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria, the federal government, promised to alleviate the sufferings of the people, brought about by measures taken, by creating jobs for unskilled and itinerant workers as a way of keeping them engaged.
It is the aftermath of the painstaking work of an inter ministerial committee set up in April. The Committee was drawn from eight ministries and headed by the director general, National Directorate of Employment which made far reaching decisions.
One of its recommendations, now adopted, is the setting up of state selection committees to identify and recruit those to be engaged under the programme.
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Labour and Employment carried out the inauguration exercise with representatives of the committees through a virtual meeting, as a result of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 health
crisis
He charged members of the Committees to live up to expectations as they pledge commitment to a national call.
