They believe only drastic measures can bring the change the region so desires and needs
The leaders, rising from the 62nd ordinary session of the Ecowas Authority of Heads of State and Government took the decision to recalibrate the peace and security architecture of the region
The President of the Ecowas Commission who briefed Journalists after the summit says chiefs of defence staff of the region will work on the modalities of how the regional force will work
It is unclear at the moment if this will be a reintroduction of the regional peace keeping mission, ECOMOG or if it will take another form
Funding was also discussed by the leaders of the Authority, who agree that voluntary contributions have not really helped the region
Now they conclude there is need to ensure deliberate contributions by all members states in a bid to raise funds to meet the region’s action plan
On the ongoing transition negotiations, the Authority of Heads of State and Government decided that transitions must stay on course in the 3 affected countries
They insist there is no exception to the return to democracy as agreed in the transition
They also express concern over the continued detention of Ivorien soldiers in Mali since July 2022
