As the 2023 general election inches closer, there are indications that Delta State, the big heart, will be one of the states to watch out for given the political intrigue already playing out in the state.
With incumbent governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, gunning for the presidency, who becomes his successor? this is the question on the lips of Deltans, given the popularity of many of the candidates running for the governorship position.

The candidate of the People’s Democratic Party who is also the speaker of Delta State House of Assembly Sheriff Oborevwori having scaled the hurdle of the court case hanging over his head, will slug it out with other prominent and popular candidates like Senator Ovie Omo Agege of the APC Great Oboru of APGA, Kenneth Gbagi of SDP amongst others.
Delta State Commissioner for information, Charles Amiagwu likened the political season to the game of football where you sometimes see some of the players who may want to accuse their coaches of not doing certain things because they are interested in moving to another club or just to paint their coach black.
According to him, what is happening in the political space is not unexpected especially coming from other other political parties.
Mr Amiagwu stated that the negative impact of the APC administration has been felt by Nigerians irrespective of location.
The Delta State Commissioner for information used the opportunity to highlight some of the achievements this current governor in terms of infrastructure development, improvement of human capital, upgrade of Asaba airport, dual road carriages and more.
In his reaction to what occurred during the ward to ward campaign where youth of Delta North Senatorial District stopped Ndudi Elumelu from entering their community, saying politicians come to make promises but don’t deliver, Mr Amiagwu said it is like saying someone was not voted because he did not perform.
“Ndudi Elumelu is one person who has performed far more than any representative, not only in Delta, but across the country.
This is the period of politics, there are individuals who may just believe that the only way to stop you or to cast aspersion or to put a little minus on you is to look for that very sticky mud and throw it at your white clothes.
“If youths preventing somebody, or shouting is going to be your yardstick, then everybody can continuously sponsor people to go and make noise.
“If the disruption of rally is what is going to be used as the judgment of performance, you will be getting it wrong, particularly at a time like this.
“Performance is judged by indices.
Going further, the Delta state commissioner for information said any other candidate who was not Oborevwori would have defeated Omo-Agege as he does not have any track record.
For the seeming cracks in the PDP, Mr Amiagwu stated that the party is speaking with one voice as former Delta governor Uduaghan has endorsed the candidate of Oborewvori and the candidature of Ifeanyi Okowa as the Vice President of the PDP.
” He is also leading campaign from that direction and that is from Delta South. He’s a leader in that place as a former governor.
“At the Delta Central where Omo-Agege is from, All the political bigwigs are very much in support of Sheriff Oborevwori, not only because he has been very outstanding as the speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly but because he has respect for every Nigerian irrespective of your age.
“In Delta North where Okowa is from, it is locked up for Oborewvori.
In Delta state, PDP has what to show and that is what is going to propel the candidature of Sherriff Oborewvori in addition to his personality,”Mr Amiagwu added.
