The National Institute of Town Planners is calling on government at all levels to implement the urban and regional planning law enacted in 1992.
The organization also wants relevant structures and regulatory agencies put in place such as a Ministry for physical Planning to prioritise the planning and development of human settlements.
There is a growing advocacy for increased awareness on the importance of town planning and effective management of human settlements in Nigeria to ensure a stress-free living.
The National Institute of Town planners strongly believes that until proper attention is given to physical planning and development, Nigeria may be unable to solve its challenges.
Now it has taken its advocacy a notch higher, urging government at all levels to prioritize the establishment of a special Ministry for town planning and other relevant structures to avoid the indiscriminate development of jungle cities
The group also urges the federal government to Prepare a national, regional and local area master plan with the help of experienced town planners to mitigate the impact of flooding and other environmental disasters in Nigeria within a 25 year timeframe.
The issue of proper planning of development across Nigeria has been on the Front Burner for sometime with observers always wondering why people put up structures without proper planning for Other Social Amenities as seen in most Cities across the Country.
This has ensured that putting up Other Social amenities outside of the original masterplan of cities have become not only an expensive but almost impossible job on the part of government who have failed to in most cases enforce laws meant to ensure proper development of towns.
The lack of proper planning and enforcement of planned development has also made it difficult for government to enhance and expand on Infrastructure across the Country as seen in the recent demolition that came with the construction of the Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge rail.
