Nigerians are demanding justice after an investigative report by the Punch newspaper which revealed that sixty five school girls were raped by their teachers between the months of January and November this year.
According to the report, the ages of the focus range of from 2 to 16 years. Given that rape cases are under reported in Nigeria, many fear that the number might even be more than the figure being reported.
Many Nigerians are in shock and puzzled as to how can a grown man sexualise children and then proceed to assault them.
Wemimo Adebiyi, a certified cognitive behavioral therapist speaking on TVCBreakfast stated that the sixty five reported by the Newspaper is more than that because those are the ones actually known.
There are quite a lot of them who have decided to own the shame and Some do not even know that what actually happened to them is rape.
Mrs Adebiyi noted that ‘rape’ is becoming a normal thing, which should not be normal because a lot of people do not understand the real definition of that word, rape.
She went on to explain what rape is saying it is any form of sexual activity, that someone carries out with you without your consent.
“When we talk about consent, a child between the ages of zero and 18 doesn’t have the capacity to give consent.
The Cognitive Behaviour Therapist, explaining why there is an increase in cases of rape especially in schools, said “The first thing is, after home, school is the most vulnerable place where children, you can easily find them. And we have a lot of people today who claim to be teachers who are not doing this job by reason of ‘I am passionate or I want to mold lives’, they are there for economic reasons and ‘to have fun’, and children, especially girls, they see them as their object of pleasure.
“Again, we run a system where we’re beginning to deviate into some ritualistic pathways where you believe until you do this with a child, you can’t get this, which is absolutely wrong.
“A lot of people, especially males teachers, there are situations where they bring pornographic content to watch in schools, and there is no way an adult, a teacher, or any individual feed his or her mind on such content, and you will not be carried away or you want to explore it, and the next object of exploration will be the child.
“So many things are webbed and a lot of things are going on that people are not even aware of.
She added that anyone could be a perpetrator of sexual violence as it is not written on faces and Parents should who stop taking their decisions in the area of this person is safe, or my child is safe with this person because of who the person is.
“Because rape perpetrators are often recognized, parents should not look too far and assume, well, my child is at school, you’re safe, my child is at home, you’re secure, my child is with the neighbor, you’re safe. No. Anyone, including the child’s father, could commit a crime “.
“We have several cases where fathers have become the rapist, as it were, of their own daughters, not one, not two, and at the end of the day, they put them in a family way, and at times, their parents, the mother, get to know about it, and they try to cover it up in the name of, I don’t want my family name or marriage messed up but they forget that the life of that child has been messed up.
“A lot of parents, especially mothers, are not really living up to expectations to protect children.
“When we talk about protecting your girl child, it’s about thinking ahead. What, who could be a potential perpetrator here. If you know, as a parent, as a mother, you are not going to do it, then think about the next person around your child, then this sexual violence could also be perpetrated online technologically.
