The Kano State Executive Council has approved a 50% increase in state scholarship allowances for indigenous students attending Nigerian universities.
It also authorised the release of N865.4 million to the state scholarship board as unpaid allowance and the provision of logistics for student payment across the state’s 44 local governments and five Emirates.
This was revealed by the state’s information commissioner, Muhammad Garba, on Thursday while briefing reporters on the results of the weekly meeting that had taken place in the council cham
He added that a total of 40,494 indigent students would benefit from the scholarships.
According to him, the total outstanding scholarships for the state’s 44 local governments’ 40,494 internal students from Karaye, Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Kano amount to N836,269,150, while the logistics for payment amount to N29,180,000.
Garba further indicated that Karaye Emirate has eight local governments with 3,094 students and will have N61,463,950 outstanding allowances and N4,020,000. as logistics, while Bichi Emirate with nine local governments and 3,494 students will receive N71,242, 800 as outstanding allowances and N4,020,000 for logistics.
The commissioner also stated that the allowances and logistics for the 4,015 students from Rano Emirate, which has ten local governments, will be N78,351,800 and N4,020,000, respectively, while Gaya Emirate, which has nine local governments and 4,260 students, will receive N86,236,600 in outstanding allowances and N4,020,000 in logistics.
He claimed that the Kano Emirate, which has eight local governments, has unpaid scholarships for 26,086 students and will receive N538,974,000 in addition to N13,100,000 for logistics.
