The federal road safety corps is excited about the prospect of mass producing speed limiter devices locally made in Nigeria.
For them this means highways in the country will be safer.
Correspondent Femi Akande reports that preliminary report released by the federal road safety corps reveals that over-speeding caused the death of more than 20 people last week when two inter-state commercial vehicles collided on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics confirms that speed violation was the major cause of accidents last year.
This accounts for 33.86 percent of the Total road accidents reported.
The Federal road safety corp marshals are under pressure to change this worrisome trend. The work in progress is the production of speed limiter device, The first of its kind by highway digital manufacturing plant in Nigeria.
There are hopes that this will cut down the price of the device and also make it accessible to commercial vehicles that form more than 50 percent on cars on the highway.
For the federal road safety corps the speed limiter device can change the statistics of road accidents.
Commercial Bus drivers do not only worry about carrying passengers and making profit, they now worry about the speed limiter device.
Section 119 (6) of the national road traffic regulation 2012 states that all vehicles plying any public road shall be in possession of speed limiting device.
