The newly elected French president, Emmanuel Macron has called on his countrymen to join him in turning a new page in the country’s history.
Macron made this call on Sunday while delivering his victory speech.
He defeated Marine Le Pen, the Far-right nationalist who threatened to take France out of the European Union.
But to Macron, the task ahead is immense and requires commitment of all France.
Le Pen Congratulates Macron:
Minutes after the poll closed and the exit results came in, Marine Le Pen conceded defeat and congratulated the winner.
She made the announcement at her campaign headquaters amid cheers from her supporters.
Le Pen lost the vote by 20% despite her rising profile during this electioneering campaign.
Hollande’s reaction:
And out-going French President Francois Hollande on Sunday said Centrist Emmanuel Macron’s victory in France’s presidential election, showed most voters wanted to unite around “the values of the Republic”.
Hollande called Macron to congratulate him on his victory.
Hollande’s former prime minister Manuel Valls, called separately for a broad presidential majority to be built around Macron in legislative elections next month.
