Nigeria’s Federal Government, the United Nations and other international organisations are mourning late former health minister, Babatunde Osotimehin.
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has extended the Nigerian government’s condolences to Osotimehin’s wife, children and entire family.
In a statement issued by his media assistant, Osinbajo described the death as a great loss, and said he’d be remembered for his many significant developmental contributions at home and abroad.
United Nations Secretary-general Antonio Guterres has also expressed profound sadness at Osotimehin’s death.
Guterres described him as a colleague and a friend, saying the world has lost a great champion of health and well-being for all.
The UN boss particularly praised Osotimehin’s “forceful advocacy for the world’s women and girls.”
And the UN Population Fund which Osotimehin was heading before he died says it is devastated by the death.
In announcing his death, UNFPA said it was a loss for women, girls and youth whom he dedicated his life to serving.
According to the global body, Osotimehin was bold and never afraid of a challenge.
The UNFPA says it is dedicated to continuing Osotimehin’s grand vision for women and young people.
