The Independent National Electoral Commission has issued the certificate of return to the winner of the Adamawa state governorship election, Ahmadu Fintiri.
After an inconclusive process on the first ballot, Ahmadu Fintiri was declared winner of the supplementary election that was nearly truncated by the actions of the resident electoral commissioner.
A happy Ahmadu Fintiri receives his certificate of return, validating his re-election as Governor of Adamawa State.
He was declared winner of the supplementary election after more than 48 hours of confusion and uncertainty caused by the state resident electoral commissioner who illegally usurped the powers of the returning officer in the state.
The Governor acknowledges that this experience was a tough one and indeed INEC has demonstrated its commitment to strengthening democracy in the country.
He also apologised for the targeted attacks on INEC National Commissioners in the state.
The duly elected governor however insists the resident electoral commissioner whose action nearly jeopardised the conclusion of the governorship election should be prosecuted, alongside the state commissioner of Police.
Governor Fintiri won the supplementary election with four hundred and thirty thousand eight hundred and sixty one votes , to defeat his closest challenger, Aisha Dahiru Binani who polled three hundred and ninety eight thousand, seven hundred and eighty eight votes .
But the governorship election in Adamawa State is not yet a closed chapter, as Ahmadu fintiri settles down to continue the business of governance, security agencies will also continue investigating the incident to establish the culpability of their operatives and mete appropriate punishments.
